Circle of Security- Building Relationships
Sunday, October 8, 2017
1:00- 5:00 pm
UH Manoa College of Education

The Circle of Security workshop is designed to offer direction and clarity in understanding the dynamics of early relationships and their critical importance. Participating parents:

  • Better understand “challenging” behaviors and where they come from
  • Learned to read their child’s cues with more skill, helping to address a need and prevent power struggles or challenging behavior
  • Explored their own understanding, triggers, and biases when it comes to relating to their children
  • Gained confidence in understanding where their child/ children  are on the “circle” and what they can do to support their needs for exploration and comfort

5 Things We Want You To Know: An Open Letter To Educators and Parents of Young Children by Naomi Rombaoa Tanaka

Dearest Educators and Parents of young children,

First, thank you. Thank you for the countless hours and energy nurturing and teaching your students and children. Thank you for showing them the way, through your example and care. They are watching, even if it may not seem like it at times. It may not always be sunshine and rainbows, but we find it amazing how you still find the bright spots in the darkest of days. Thank you for wiping away those tears, brushing off those skinned knees after a tumble, and putting on those superhero capes… and yes, doing these things for the youngsters in your life as well. Thank you for taking care of you so that you can take care care of the keiki. Make no doubt about it, you are miracle workers. You don’t only make a difference, you make The Difference. Every single day, you make magic happen. Every single day, you have the potential to change the world. We are so grateful for you!

H-PEP Educator Cohort 1 Recap

H-PEP welcomed to the world its very first Cohort of educators on May 21, 2016. In what would be a first of its kind, the Hawaiʻi Positive Engagement Project welcomed educators from around the state to embark on a 10 week professional development course.

“We want our educators to make a connection not only to the material and each other but also to themselves” says Naomi Rombaoa Tanaka, H-PEP Project Coordinator. “Educating our keiki is a great responsibility and it can be incredibly stressful. We provide educators with tools to practice self care and strength- based mindsets, in hopes that they can be their best selves and help keiki be their best selves.”

H-PEPʻs first cohort, wrapped up itʻs course work with a final full day celebrated in aloha and laughter on July 23, 2016.

H-PEP Educator Cohort 2 Recap

H-PEP Educator Cohort 2 closed off their 10 week course this past Saturday, November 19. Cohort 2 featured a wide range of instructors and subject matters that revolved around H-PEPʻs core founding principles of positivity and self care. There were massage sessions, journaling, online educational lectures and juggling! Most of all there was a bond that was forged between participants who became more than just a network of early education professionals but a community of support that went beyond this moment in time.

“we are so fortunate to have such a caring community of educators.”

With most of the cohortʻs content and interaction based online, the community initially faced the challenge of creating connectivity in a technologically based world. “It was a challenge that our educators immediately met with open arms. Learning new things and reaching outside of our comfort zones helped to push us through those initial challenges.”says Naomi Rombaoa Tanaka, H-PEPʻs Project Coordinator. Adding,”we are so fortunate to have such a caring community of educators.”

With Cohort 2 in the books, the Hawaiʻi Positive Engagement Project looks forward to welcoming their third Cohort at the start of 2017.Visit our H-PEP Educator Cohort page for more information on how you can be a part of the movement happy educators!
